DAL Agricultural Services Co. Ltd.

Overview

DAL Agricultural Services develops and manages its own large scale farms. We operate two farms in Khartoum State and are rapidly expanding in other areas of Sudan. Since its establishment in 1984 DAL Agriculture has become one of the most successful agricultural businesses in Sudan. It is widely recognised for its pioneering spirit, and its commitment to quality and innovation.

The farms use internationally recognised best practice farming techniques, the latest irrigation and dairy technologies,  and apply the most effective production methods to Sudan’s climate. DAL Agriculture produce is premium quality and is sold locally, exported, or processed by other DAL Group companies. The farms follow best practice water management, use environmentally friendly farming techniques, and provide employment and outreach initiatives to local communities.

History

DAL Agriculture evolved out of Sutrac, a sister company within the Group, and provided third party contractual services (using Caterpillar machinery) for activities such as harvesting and land preparation in the fertile Jezeera state, south of Khartoum.  During the early 90’s there was a foreign exchange crisis in Sudan, and farmers started paying for DAL Agriculture’s services in sorghum rather than hard currency. The sorghum was exported, and the revenues generated were used to purchase wheat for import to Sudan.

DAL Group soon recognised that the real business opportunity lay in milling and, in 1997, launched Sayga.  During the 1990’s the company also bought land to start growing staples such as sorghum. This lead to the establishment of today’s farming initiatives, Ailafoun, Al Waha, Abu Hamad, and Wadi Halfa.

Agriculture in Sudan

Sudan has high agricultural development potential: large areas of fertile land available, direct access to abundant renewable water sources, and an excellent climate. Agriculture already plays an important role in the Sudanese economy, accounting for approximately one third of GDP.

The River Nile, the Blue Nile and White Nile, and their tributaries cover a large area of Sudan, providing it with abundant water supply. Sudan ranks third in terms of per capita access to renewable water supplies across the MENASA (Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia) region.
